General

Finally, I have a picture of a finished product to share!

This is the Emlyn dress that I knitted for Christmas for a special little friend of G’s mother. This is size 2T, knit on US2 needles.  G’s mother gets all of the credit for the patience required to lace the cord and ribbon through the eyelets, though. So not a task for me. 🙂

PSA: I have a scanner, and I’m not afraid to use it. (Opt-out available.)

Every now and again, it occurs to me that I have A) a remarkable number of print photos (including the yearbooks from Kalaheo High School, years 1988-1991), B) a really handy little photo scanner, and C) a lot of free time. If I can get my desk cleaned up, I might have to start scanning some of the huge collection of photos that Jer and Shama helped me unearth the last time they were down visiting.

If you really object to having your photo posted online, please let me know, and I will do my best to honor your wishes. Otherwise, all bets are off!

PSA: Resolute communication. (A call for recipients.)

As many of you know, I went total hermit for a few years, pretty much falling off of the face of the planet. In this past year, I’ve made something of a comeback. I’ve actually made a couple of trips to visit friends, and have reappeared in the online world. These are good things.

But receiving a few Christmas cards this year made me remember just how much I love to get personal, physical mail. And I thought that there might be some of you out there who enjoy the same sort of thing. So, if you’d like to be added to my list of random snail mail recipients, please respond via private message with your name (it’s entirely possible that you’re using a pseudonym and I honestly either have never known or have completely forgotten your ‘real’ name) and favored mailing address.

I’m going to try to write a letter a week, which means I need more recipients soon, or a few family members and a couple of friends are going to get really sick of me really quickly. 🙂

Madness, Day 1.

(Ok, I know for most of you, this isn’t going to seem like madness. It will, in fact, probably seem like a fairly boring day. But I have largely turned into a hermit, and one with somewhat limited mobility, to boot. So, it’s a kind of madness.)

Today’s agenda:

  • 2 loads of laundry
  • trying to find all of my blocking materials
  • drive to Columbia to return long-unused cable boxes (and remotes), so Vz can stop charging us some ridiculous amount of money each month
  • phone call with a friend about helping with a dog rescue web site
  • trip to a local yarn store to buy needles for Teresa and any blocking materials I couldn’t find
  • trip to Teresa’s house to block a couple of Christmas presents (which will undoubtedly result in unhappy knees and/or back)

After that, I think I shall come home, have a glass of wine or two, and watch some silly movie. Or maybe my cats rampaging around the house. Or knit. (Though, not so much the knitting after the second glass of wine.)

Wish me luck!

PSA: Act now! Supplies are limited!

Yeesh.

As diligent readers will know, I don’t exactly lead a hectic life. With the exception of my weekly foray to Ashburn to visit Jenn and Jim, I’m mostly a homebody. I leave the house for errands and medical appointments.

That said, this week is quickly ramping up to be full of all sorts of social, and it’s actually kind of filling up. If there’s anything you need me for this week, speak now, or wait until after Christmas.

Dear LazyWeb: Best photo management app?

In case any of you think that I’m convinced that All Things Cupertino are good, let me assure you that’s not the case. I use gmail’s web UI over mail.app. I use Chrome over Safari. I admit to using Contacts (formerly Address Book) and Calendar (formerly iCal) simply because the iPhone / iCloud interoperability is hard to beat. But, there are some things that the brainy little developers at 1 Infinite Loop come up with that drive me buggy. And iPhoto is about 3 of those things. So, it’s time for me to ditch iPhoto.

Jenn is the awesome.

In case anyone wasn’t aware (and I’m not sure how that could possibly be the case, but on the off chance…) Jenn is absolutely awesome. She got me an early Christmas / birthday / lots of other things gift: a Tom Binh Brain Bag. (With the problems with my knees, I need to stop carrying so much weight in shoulder bags, and I had somehow managed to give away all of my backpacks. So, Jenn to the rescue.)

This thing is awesome. I’m packing up for a couple of days away, and have crammed a ton of stuff into it:

  • 15″ MacBook Pro in protective case
  • Clipboard with knitting patterns / agendas
  • Ginormous InDesign book
  • Knitting book
  • iPad
  • Kindle
  • 4 knitting projects
  • Colored pencils / sharpener / erasers
  • Cables and batteries
  • Camera
  • Meds

And there’s probably still room for a couple of changes of clothes, though I’ll probably throw that in another bag, since I don’t quite have the organization-fu down with the new bag yet. And it doesn’t feel heavy on my back, and rides perfectly. I am absolutely delighted.

But it pours.

*sigh*

I have somehow managed to go from a state where I have almost nothing to do to a state where I’m feeling a wee bit overwhelmed.

To help matters, we appear to have a hurricane bearing down on us. And I’ve borrowed Turtle and Drama (two of my favoritest dogs on Earth) for a week or so, so I get to figure out walking dogs in a storm.

Oh, and G and I both get migraines induced by shifts in the barometric pressure. Something I’m sure won’t be happening at all over the next few days.

All in all, a great big don’t wanna.

It’s what’s for breakfast!

Li hing cherry and a Coke, that is.

I have no earthly idea why I’m up this early, but I figured I might as well stop trying to fall back asleep and actually get up. So here I sit, yawning and typing at you. Not that you’re not fascinating. It’s just, 4:30 AM, you know.

Today’s plan: Mad progress on at least 2 projects I’m working on. I’m hoping to get a little bit ahead of the game for the week so that I go out and play tomorrow night. Kinda nervous. Kinda excited. Then kinda nervous again. 🙂

Anything fun happening in your neck of the woods? Do I need to send you li hing cherries and a Coke? 🙂

Monday, Monday

It’s been a productive morning thus far. Knitting (of course), and YAMA. Then G and I finished divesting my car of all traces of anything that it didn’t originally come with. This is to prepare the vehicle for detailing, which will take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours. In order to keep myself from going completely bonkers whilst waiting, I have wound more yarn for a couple of projects, and have some papers printed for layout project I’m working on. I’m also charging my iPad and Kindle and phone. I’m a hard chick to bore, if I have a little advanced warning. 🙂

How are y’all spending your Monday?
