It’s gonna be one of those days.

After giving up on falling asleep in bed, I got up around 1:30 this morning and came downstairs and knit for an hour or so. At that point, I moved the 15 feet to the couch, put in my earbuds, and listened to music until I fell asleep. I’m guessing the “falling asleep” bit happened around 4.

Time, as it does, passed. I know this because, when my eyes next opened, they opened to a room lit from outside. I attempted to fumble for my phone and my glasses at the same time. Quickly figuring out this was not going to work, I then just fumbled for my phone. Once I figured out I could follow the earbuds cable (that, until I had this epiphany, seemed to exist only to hinder my attempts to find my phone), I was able to check the time: 6:38.

Well, crap.

On sleep (or lack thereof), and cats, and the intersection of same.

Those of you who were following along with my flurry of updates and comments on facebook last night know that I was having a great deal of difficulty finding my way to sleep. This was particularly annoying as it was the third1 night running that this was a problem. My body doesn’t have much in the way of reserves to draw upon, and it really needs to be able to recharge through sleep. Often more than once per day. Any significant drop in the aggregate amount of sleep I get in a 24 hour period generally leads to an abrupt and overwhelming system shutdown, where my body overrides my brain and takes charge of the situation.2 These forced periods of near convalescence always occur at the most inconvenient times, and are generally a big drag. Grab Bag: Circadian what? Can’t sleep. Casting on. Introducing Legend.

While G was away, I discovered something somewhat perturbing: any concept I have of a regular schedule is driven almost exclusively by two things: G’s schedule, and Sprocket demanding to be fed at some point between 4:30 and 6:00 AM. As such, I’ve spent the last 10 days pretty much sleeping whenever I got tired, and waking up (generally) whenever my body could no longer handle being flat. Sadly, this little experiment did not produce any interesting results. The aches and pains are still going strong, I still managed to catch a cold, and I didn’t even manage to feel rested. Can’t sleep, Friday morning edition.

Well, since the sleeping thing clearly isn’t going to happen, I might as well be up and knitting. Unfortunately, my Hitofude is in timeout for non-compliance issues. So, this leaves me with that favorite task of all knitters: swatching. But, since I’ll be working on a sweater, I figure I should actually make sure it’s going to end up the right size. As an added bonus, if there’s any knitting that will put me to sleep, it’s got to be swatching.
